This was the first flight where I was accompanied with by younger brother P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe - who just joined the Squadron after being trained on and fitted with a Spitfire Mk. IXe. Although he had only logged about 30 hours of prior flight time in the Tiger Moth, Harvard and Spitfire A/Cs during training, Al did quite well on his first operational mission in the ETO and in 41 Squadron. Impressively, his first flight in a Spit Mk. IXe was only a few days before the mission - and he was able to taxi out to the runway and takeoff without incident in snowy/icy conditions. Embarrassingly, when we approached the enemy bomber group and the time came to give the order to 'engage at will', I was too focused on my own tasks and Al ended up following me to the letter and did not partake in the 'turkey shoot'. I immediately regretted that and vowed that I would not make the same mistake again! After my engine failed and I was forced to disengage, it bothered me not being able to witness the rest of his flight however I was happy to hear that he had returned safely with a 'damaged' under his belt.
