General Report | ||
Took off from Base as Red 1 with Flt Lt Merfort as wingman. Mission to fly combat air patrol over Venlo located just over the front lines.Flew over a pair of Boston bombers on the way and we flew escort for a short time until we arrived over the town of Venlo. The airfield there lies just to the east. Heard on the R/T from Red 2 that he had been hit and was bailing out. Below me I saw a flight of P-38 Lightnings in combat with a number of enemy a/c. later identified as 109s. I attempted to assist the friendly a/c but they were both shot down and pilots both bailed out. I was attacked astern by a 109 and I broke hard to port. I then climbed away at Gate power in order to chase a fleeing enemy a/c. Very quickly I felt my a/c to be hit and I was severly wounded with the a/c crash landing coming on a field. |
