From Ophoven, flight GROWLER was tasked with conducting an advanced recce/sweep of Venlo. En route, F/Lt 'Riksen' Richards spotted a 109 low on the deck. Having an altitude advantage, I dove to catch my prey. The 109 made a poor judgement call and attempted to climb away but with my speed advantage it was all too little too late as I gave him both .50 and 20mm rounds to his aircraft. The hun attempted to reverse his manouevre and dive away but as he saw that I had stayed with him he tried to bailout. Before realizing that the poor sod was trying to bailout, I had already fired another burst; he did not leave his craft. Flight GROWLER reconsolidated and headed towards Venlo. Just southwest of Venlo, F/Lt 'Riksen' Richards spotted a 190 and coaxed me in to get my second kill of the day. I closed in from the low six of the hun and sent him in. Shortly thereafter, we heard on the R/T that F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe had spotted a flight of 3 bandit's which sent us on a 20 kilometer dash to his position. F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe announced that the hun had become aware of his presence and preceded to engage him. We lost communication with F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe and could not find a wreckage in his last known area of operation. Upon return to the base, we got word that allied forces discovered his burning wreck. His throttle was full rich and his ammo low; at least we knew he gave them hell. F/O 'Mac' Steele |
