'B Flight' tasked with a ground attack mission over Plettenberg - Codenamed BUMPER led by F/O 'Mac' Steele with myself as wingman (Red 2), F/Lt 'Riksen' Richards leading 'Blue Flight' with P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe as his wingman (Blue 2), took off from Cologne without issue and headed towards the objective. This time we took a single 500lb payload; and when we were coming around for our final bombing-approach on the target Blue Flight reported that they were jumped by an Me 109 and had to drop bombs and break. Red Flight pressed on and dropped bombs directly over the target; however with the worry of more enemy activity in the area I did not check to see the effect of our bombs. We regrouped West of the objective where F/Lt 'Riksen' Richards spotted another flight of enemy fighters. F/O 'Mac' Steele ordered Blue Flight to attack while Red Flight remained as top-cover. Over the R/T I heard that P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe took some hits but Riksen was able to get on it's 6 and destroy it. Red Flight was set at about 14,000 feet and I was not able to see the action below. Shortly after Blue Flight requested an RTB since P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe was hit and had difficulty in flight; and so Red Flight attempted to escort Blue Flight back to base. We were all able to land successfully. F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe |
