B Flight was assigned a train attack mission outside of Wassenburg. We took off in earnest from AF A-89, leaving F/O 'Mac' Steele behind at the runway and myself taking the lead with P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe as my wingman. We flew to Wassenburg and I decided to steer south and follow the rail-line to see if we could find the train; and only moments later spotted the 'chooch' (smoke) billowing out of the locomotive at the front. P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe and I took turns strafing the train, and on my first run I was able to separate the engine compartment from the cars behind; resulting in most of the train coming to a dead stop. I ordered Al to help take out the engine car first so that we could easily and safely deal with the cars at the rear. We achieved this and so with the help of F/O 'Mac' Steele who had arrived just in time, we strafed the train until there were no more cars left. F/O 'Mac' Steele (taking over lead) ordered us to the R/V and while en route I had heard that P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe had gotten hit and was going down. While searching for him I spotted an FW 190 and F/O 'Mac' Steele was able to make short work of him. After that we RTB'd back to A-89 and we were able to land without issue. F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe |
