Transferred to A Flight again for an offensive sweep mission over Kelz AF. Took off from Le Culot without issue; however once we crossed the front line near Duren I heard on the R/T from P/O 'Bird' Irwin that S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort had taken Flak and was going down. I looked over and confirmed on my 3 o'clock that he was missing part or all of his tail and was rapidly going down. Shortly after we did a circuit over our objective at Kelz we started taking AAA. Our flight leader F/Lt 'Madov' Emblin reported that he had taken damage and I could see that he was trailing white smoke. We quickly reformed and headed back to friendly lines to escort him back to put down behind friendly lines. He was losing coolant quickly and so he landed short of our home base at another airfield North of Liege. Once he broke off and landed the rest of the flight headed to Le Culot and put down successfully there. | ||
