General Report

Transferred to A Flight for train attack mission over Venlo. Took off from Y-29 without issue and proceeded to the front lines. We started taking heavy flak and I saw an Me 109 move into position behind F/O 'Gunny' Cook - at which point I reported over R/T and engaged the bandit. I forgot to report that the enemy broke away from him and I chased him off away from the Flight. I destroyed the bandit I believe just south of Venlo and attempted to form up with the rest of the Squadron. I was not able to find my position on the map and while circling around an unidentified city another Me 109 jumped me and moved into position on my 6. I was able to break/dive and swung around in position on his 6 and began firing. I got in a few bursts of 20mm near his cockpit and saw flames coming out of the engine compartment - confirmed that it went down. Soon after that action our flight leader S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort had spotted me and we were able to form up. Trying to get a hold of White-1 on the R/T but he had let down in a field somewhere near the target area. Once we found P/O 'Bird' Irwin we proceeded to RTB at Y-29 and while we were forming up to land the airfield became under attack by another flight of Me 109s. We broke out of formation and started engaging the Hun. I was able to jump onto a 109 that flew down to my right and got another good squirt of 20mm in his fuselage and I saw him go down and explode on the ground below. I started to engage another 109 supported by S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort and I ran out of 20mm and then also 50 Cal. I reported this to Red-1 and he was able to get into position to finish the job. Sadly during this action I heard over the R/T that P/O 'Bird' Irwin was shot down; however I did not see his aircraft go in. We saw no more enemy in the sky and proceeded to land successfully.
