On way to ground strike sortie launching an attack on the kraut battle group Chill. on route to the target an USAAF spitfire joins us in formation providing air-cover (?) with some questionable flying. Red Leader led in with the dive i followed making an 120° turn to starboard. i dived from about 8000ft, released payload at about 2200ft pulled up and turned 90° to port to rejoin with Red Leader in formation. At this moment i spot in my mirror my payload going off destroying the kraut dugouts. After this i proceed to the agreed rendezvous after loosing sight on Red Leader. A call comes over the radio "P/O gunny" explaining how an ME262 was diving on him, the consequence of this left him dead. finally i gain sight on Red Leader and form on his port wing however Red 3 and Yellow 1 were still unseen at this point to both me and Red Leader no surprise there. We finally get eyes on Red 3 and Yellow 1 finding them orbiting the wrong town thinking that was the rendezvous. After this cockup we rejoin in formation and head back to B.58 for an eventful landing. F/O 'Will' Vale |
