General Report

Red Flight to Remagen to bomb enemy artillery. I took off from Base at 1945 hrs, as the airfield is still cratered we had to go off in single file and form up in the air. The flight to Remagen area was uneventful and we only experienced FLAK once we were over the town and bridge area itself. Flt Lt Merfort put us in echelon left for the run in and once the standby order was given we got into Line Astern. The Skipper led us over into the dive very nicely and I was able to position myself well for the right hand side of the target. I really wanted to get my bombs right on the nose, so I went down as far as 2000 ft before I started the pullout. Three seconds count and then 'bombs away' and I knew I had scored direct hits on those gun emplacements. Full throttle low level escape and then we climbed back to about 4000 ft for a strafing run. Got some cannon rounds on another artillery piece. We went round for a second strafing run but this time I was unable to steady my aim onto a target so I didn't fire at all, thinking to save my ammunition for any air combat that was to come. We regrouped quickly and flew back to Base under the leadership of Flt Lt Merfort and we performed our customary A Flight overhead break at Aachen airfield. Good show all round.
