10. Summary of Pilot's Report |
Returning from the dive-bombing mission to the Scheldt estuary we approached the runway in right echelon at low altitude for our standard overhead break. That part went well but Red Two and Red Three were being somewhat tardy so I moved into the gap created behind Red One. He landed about 400 yards ahead of me and I performed an excellent landing. The runway at B.58 is tarmacadam and very smooth. After touching down I rolled out as normal. After about 10 seconds I heard a call from Red Two on the radio, looked in my mirror and saw a Spitfire colliding into the rear of my a/c and felt a huge and violent lurch forwards and then backwards as my a/c snapped it's main wing spar and broke its fuselage. My neck began to hurt very quickly after this collision took place and I was forced to accept the medicinal brandy that the Intelligence Officer offered me. No other injury was sustained. Red Two said that he had not sustained any injury at all, except perhaps to his pride. |
