I was tasked with leading flight BUMPER with S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort as my wingman to check the situation over oir armored units in the vicinity of Werl and engage any targeta of opportunity taking off from Paderborn. Once we approached the target at about 16000ft, we could clearly see the enemy airfield about 30 km away but the cloudy weather made spotting aircraft difficult. I then decided to keep our group over the Allied tanks as they were easier to keep eye of but approximately 20 min later we encountered a formation of Fw-190s with about 6 planes heading to our troops. We engaged with some help from some nearby P-51s and the formation quickly scaretted. A few Me-109s tried to assist the 190s but they evacuated the area once they realized they were vastly outnumbered. During their escape attempt, I was able to shoot one down after a swift turn fight. On our egress route, I spotted a lonely Fw-190 making his way back to German lines and ordered S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort to engage the enemy. With great marksmanship, it seems S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort hit the enemy ordinance just bellow its belly and a big explosion was seen. All pilots RTBed safely. F/Lt 'Riksen' Richards |
