FromB-70, B flight led by myself with F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe and P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe conducted a ground attack mission on enemy panzer's on their way to the front. We attacked with little success and caused what seems to have been superficial damage to enemy dugout's. However, F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe was unable to acquire a target on the flight's pass and went around for another pass causing the destruction of an enemy dugout. During his pass, he had begun to take severe AA fire which allured P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe and I to engage AA positions ensuring the safe withdrawal of our comrade. I had made one pass and destroyed one AA position as well as witnessing the demise of another thank's to the accurate fire from P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe. P/O 'Al' A. Lamothe and I had disengaged but got separated with each other. I couldn't find my wingman so I with haste egressed as quickly as possible out of enemy territory. During my route, I had spotted Zack's damaged craft and provided top cover for him and navigational assistance to have him land at the closest allied airfield. I had spooted the American airfield of Y-29 which he set course to. Mere seconds before Zack's final, the airfield came under attack by a lone 109. I engaged and danced violently with the hun but that alone was too much for him as he then disengaged and sped for home. I returned to base with no more action being witnessed. F/O 'Mac' Steele |
